A late-breaking development here on this front is that a NZ politician has suggested banning car-parking near schools so that children can't be dropped at the door, they have to walk! The word 'communist' was actually used in response to the suggestions by another politician. Trying to find a weblink for this I can't seem to...
Oh yes and the UK's response to this has been to start weighing all schoolchildren on a regular basis. Primary schools are not the most private of venues for collecting this kind of information - I would worry that this is going to lead to at least some shaming of the largest children:
